Grey silk tea-length evening gown worn by Evelyn Baker Langlie, 1958

This dress belonged to Evelyn Baker Langlie (1903-2000) former first lady of Washington State. It is missing its original belt. Langlie was born in Pittsburgh and met Arthur B. Langlie on a blind date in Spokane. They married in 1928. She was passionate about music and the arts and was a supporter of the Seattle Opera, Seattle Symphony, Seattle Art Museum and the Museum of History & Industry. Arthur was a Seattle City Council member from 1935 to 1938 and served as Seattle’s Mayor from 1938 to 1941. He was then elected governor of Washington State and served two non-consecutive terms from 1941 to 1945 and again from 1949 to 1957. Evelyn was dedicated to her role as First Lady which included everything from planning elegant banquets for state visitors to digging in the dirt to create a Victory Garden during WWII.
